Big Pooh/Sleepers

Posted by Guy Fawkes

Big Pooh, 1/2 of the Carolina based group Little Brother has been in the industry for quite a while. If you haven't heard of him, your in for quite the surprise, and if you have expect more of the same. Little Brother comes with a really soulful sound (doesn't hurt that 9th Wonder produces) and the lyrics are on point. Big Pooh is known as the "hype man" of the group...trying to support my boy Rashid Hadee and many others...even if they are not labelmates. But he also is reinventing hip-hop, his label is really defining the ever popular term "alternative" or "conscious" hip-hop.... and Pooh is the one leading the charge. That being said "Sleepers" is his first solo album and it definitely brings the heat.

The Good:
Track #3- Strongest Man- This song goes hard for the whole damn time. You may find yourself nodding your head involuntarily with this track. It's amazing.

Track #4- Heart Of The City- Damn...lyrics are perfect....the beat is straight ill... and this track is instantly repeatable.

Track # 10- Scars- The storytelling off this track gives it a different feel than what you would expect from the rest of the tracks. Might be the best off the album.

Track # 14- Fever- A great song, full of narcissism, but it still delivers.

This album is pretty good, all bullshit aside, the 4 tracks listed above are really good, but the rest are pretty flawed. I'd say for an album with 14 tracks, 12 songs (1 intro, 1 interlude), 4 great tracks is still a good find.

0-20: Terrible listening experience
21-40: Maybe one good song
41-60: A few good songs
61-80: Half are good songs, half are weak
81-100: Great listening experience, almost all are great songs

This album gets a 68. I'd recommend downloading it...

I really enjoyed this album. It starts out with big pooh beating you over the head with one of the hardest rhymes I've ever heard from him.
